Pirate-Themed Caribbean Mansion ‘Villa Whydah’ Goes on Auction

Villa Whydah, named after an infamous pirate ship that sank in 1717, is widely considered one of the finest Caribbean properties currently on the market. Perched on the western tip of the island of St. Thomas, the property consists of seven structures situated on the property’s 4.4 lush acres. Living up to its nickname, the estate offers nautical and pirate-themed decor, providing the right touches of whimsy and luxury well-suited for relaxed island living.

Boasting 270 degree views of the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and Botany Bay, the Villa’s structures include a main residence, gazebo, stone tower, caretaker’s quarters and two guest cottages spanning the property’s 15,000 interior square feet, as well as an outdoor entertainment complex extending over the 4,000 square feet of outdoor living space.

With 7 bedrooms, and 9 full and 2 half bathrooms, the estate also includes integrated Crestron technology, allowing remote control of the entertainment system, speakers, lighting and temperature. Other amenities of the estate include a professional-grade kitchen, game room with 5 freestanding arcade games, and custom fishing equipment storage system. The outdoor entertainment area includes 3 outdoor showers, an infinity-edge pool with custom designed glass tile, a private jacuzzi, koi pond, two hammocks, and a lower sun deck area with a daybed.

In keeping with the pirate theme, the children’s bedroom suite includes a custom designed and built nautical-themed double bunk bed with four sleeping chambers, as well as a play area accessible via a center ladder leading to a secret hatch. The tower features a dungeon with a locking gate below an office meant to resemble the captain’s chambers on a pirate ship.

With an exceptionally high level of quality and construction, Villa Whydah is designed in a rich, British West Indies style, earning it an International Property Award in 2013 for the design and architecture.

Scheduled for a live auction on December 13, 2014, the property was previously offered for $35 million and will now be sold to the highest bidder at or above the auction’s reserve of $6 million. Platinum Luxury Auctions, a firm specializing in the auction sale of multimillion-dollar properties, is conducting the sale in cooperation with listing agent Lee Steiner, principal of the U.S.V.I. Sotheby’s International Realty brokerage firm.

Villa Whydah is located in the exclusive gated community, The Preserve at Botany Bay, a serene oasis set against a striking, natural landscape. The community boasts a beach club with a pool and organized water sports in addition to a spa which, upon its completion, will offer relaxing treatments and complimentary fitness classes. St. Thomas is a popular and vibrant island with luxury shops, top-quality restaurants and ample travel opportunities between islands.
