Piper‐Heidsieck and Régis Camus, the head winemaker of the champagne house, have received top awards in two different categories in this year’s International Wine Challenge.
[one_half]2013 marks the seventh consecutive year that Régis Camus, Piper-Heidsieck’s winemaker since 1994, and the architect of the House’s wines renewal, has been the recipient of the prestigious Sparkling Winemaker of the Year Trophy. It is also the eighth time that he has been rewarded with the prize during his coveted career. This is testimony to his ambition for Piper‐Heidsieck and his achievement of leading the House range of wines to a new echelon of excellence.Furthermore, during the IWC ceremony, Piper‐Heidsieck’s Rare Vintage 1998 was recognised with the Daniel Thibault Trophy for Champion Sparkling Wine 2013 for the second year in a row. Régis participated in shaping the 1998 beverage and this top prize once again re-affirms his know‐how and talent, as well as intuition for Piper‐Heidsieck.
As part of the International Wine Challenge, more than 10,000 wines are judged blind by over 400 experts. In the first round of tastings, the jurors review each beverage and decide whether to keep them for the next part of the competition or to exclude them. The next stage is where the wines are given a bronze, silver or gold medal (they can still be dropped at this part of the contest), and if they pass all of the former, they are then re-tasted by the chairmen of the IWC (Tim Atkin MW, Oz Clarke MW, Sam Harrop MW, Peter McCombie MW, Charles Metcalfe, and Derek Smedley MW) to verify the results.
The final round brings all gold winners together to be tasted once again for the regional or national trophy. All results are then re‐validated by chairmen, where the champion trophy and champion winemakers are selected.
