Scene Check: Forget Me Not Fridays at the Valmont Club, Chelsea

“As an online luxury lifestyle resource, we are naturally typically biased in favour of quality over quantity, so when we heard that there was small underground private members club in up-market Chelsea that was redefining London nightlife, we simply had to drop by for ‘Scene Check’ and see what all the fuss was about…..”

As an Earls Court resident myself, I cannot exactly say that I hadn’t heard of the Valmont Club, but I guess for sometime (and certainly too long), it had remained little more than just one those private member clubs that I knew was relatively near, but until the opportunity presented itself I had never actively looked for it. Anyway, as it later turns out, I had obliviously been walking past it for almost a year to my local gym in Chelsea. The thing is, that during the late afternoon period when I walked past it, there was no sign or any obvious indication of the club’s whereabouts. The only giveaway in fact, is not until the evening when the doormen and red ropes come out to mark the guest-list queue.

Well, here we are at the entrance where we are hastily quizzed by the doorman as to whether we are on the list, of which our reply seems to quickly put us in his good books, as he then warmly greets us and ushers us down the steep outdoor steps towards the cavernous black reception area. Here two courteous yet controlled brunettes check our names off the list before taking our coats and then directing us towards the main room. We arrive around 10:30pm, early by club standards, yet already the place is a hive of activity, with a private room (aka ‘Electric Salon’) still hosting guests and the main room hosting an assortment of characters mingling amongst themselves amidst sipping cocktails and some nippling at light buffet and mezze platters.

The interior design work in the club really is second to none, with elegantly sleek monochrome fitted leather furnishings and sumptuous warmly lit golden padded walls. All fixtures and fittings look meticulously positioned within millimetre perfect symmetry including the unusual (but fitting) addition of porcelain black greyhounds and a white horse that valiantly sits poised between the table reservations area and the private room.

Also of note were the sheer number of staff working on the night, which at first seemed almost overkill, but when the venue filled up ensured that this place ran like clockwork, seemingly providing instantaneous table service to those with reservations, and enough bar staff so that no one was left waiting for long. I would describe the security as firm but fair and certainly did an excellent job of maintaining a trouble-free environment.

Drinks-wise this place had absolutely everything in stock and serves up some of the best cocktails you will find anywhere and almost surprisingly not that ridiculously priced either. However, for the connoisseurs their were all the usual top shelf bottles, ranging from giant bottles of (RED) Belvedere vodka to all manner of vintage champagnes, XO cognacs and anything in between.

“Where this club really excels is in attracting the right people, its certainly not your average run of the mill, targeting more the well-heeled professionals and there upwards, but more of note it how successfully it manages to pull this off without the typical pretentiousness that is often a by-product of the City-boy egos and gold-digger clientele of many of the club’s contemporaries.”

It has to be said that the Valmont Club atmosphere was absolutely electric from 11pm until close, simply buzzing with one of the liveliest crowds you’re likely to find anywhere in London. The venue saw everyone masterly catered for, from large parties requiring anything from numerous tables to their own room, to the more discerning with sound-deadened lavish private booths with their own independent volume control and private table service as standard. Regardless of how busy the place got, everyone was thoroughly looked after by the well-organised staff and there honesty wasn’t anything I could find at fault, even the air-conditioning kept the temperature consistent throughout the night and the music was the perfect volume, loud where it needed to be and toned down in the seated areas.

“All in all this simply has to win our accolade for liveliest crowd and best-managed private club in London hands down and I simply can’t wait to get back down there again…. Roll-on the next weekend please!”

Piper-Heidsieck - The 'by word of mouth' brand of Champagne

“Piper-Heidsieck is one of those brands that you never see flaunted as a sponsor, advertised on TV, or splashed across the pages of magazines, let alone name dropped in the latest Hip-Hop or R&B singles…. and all this is for the very obvious reason that quality sells itself.”

Both Rolls Royce and Maybach are exemplary champions of this ethos. maintaining their discreet approach and never aiming to market themselves to the masses (or at least not beyond that of dreams and aspirations for most of us). For this calibre of brand, it is always a case of ‘less is more’ in terms of marketing. Piper-Heidsieck are very much party to this same mindset, and although not the common name in Bars, Clubs or Supermarket Shelves, it is frequently ‘the’ champagne of choice for those in the know, and always a firm favourite for private dining.

Also of note, whilst Louis Roederer Cristal and Moët & Chandon have had the mis-fortune of being continuously name-dropped in Hip-Hop & R&B tracks, Veuve Clicquot seem to have adorned themselves with the title of being the Polo scene’s champagne (mainly through their choice of advertising and sponsorship). The only ties that can be found with Piper-Heidsieck is its Sponsorship of Cannes Film Festival and being the champagne of choice for Marilyn Monroe and Royalty…. which is really not a bad thing for a brand in the slightest.

Whilst we have recently been honoured with the opportunity to visit the Piper-Heidsieck Vineyards in Champagne and to explore their history (and most certainly their cellars) in greater depth in the coming months, just to wet your appetite, I personally had the privilege of meeting up with Christian Holthausen, the resident expert for the House of Charles and Piper-Heidseick whilst he was in London recently, and amidst having a general chat and catch-up, ended up getting a bit carried away with a few bottles of champagne in the process.

Sometimes it is just one of those afternoons, when you fortunately don’t have much in the diary (or at least that can’t wait), there’s great weather, conversation is flowing effortlessly and you just know it will have to be a champagne affair ….well this was just such an occasion. Now when the person you are chatting with happens to also be an ambassador for Piper-Heidsieck, then you don’t just settle for a flute of house champagne, so what better way to get involved than to pop the cork on a bottle of 2002 Piper-Heidsieck Cuvée Rare. Now regardless of how seemingly insignificant an afternoon may have otherwise been, popping a bottle of fine champagne always has the instantly gratifying effect of creating an immediate sense of occasion… and nothing could sum this feeling up better than the jubilance of savouring this particular fine champagne.

To the eye, it is a relatively discreet sparkling pale gold, as to be expected, but on the nose a vivacious floral burst of honeysuckle, iris and jasmine, with notes of minerals and elegant dancing aromas of oriental fragrances such as subtle herbal teas and honey. This champagne is about as radiant and refined as they come, with feather-like delicacy that just begs one to indulge…. and that is exactly what we did.

As if we weren’t content with this extravagance alone (at a shelf RRP of £160.00 and a bar price that I daren’t mention) ….as we continued ranting away, already feeling slightly giddy with the bubbles (maybe that was just me), I started to quiz Christian about the full process of making champagne, which I would have been happy to share with you if I could remember the precise methodology, but more interestingly this did lead us to the very interesting topic of how champagne houses manage to maintain consistencies across their range and namely their standard benchmark ranges. So inevitably (almost as if I had planned it), we then obviously had to sample a bottle of the Piper-Heidsieck’s signature Cuvée Brut, which although only retailing for around £30 a bottle may seem like a backward step, actually in many respects (as their most popular champagne), it probably says more about their brand than all their Vintages put together.

Whilst I do not like to pigeonhole any products, I would instantly a liken the Cuvée Brut to that of a classic Bollinger, with those typically more fruity notes of pear and apple. When compared with the 2002 Rare, it is as if the bright fresh high notes of the champagne now have a gentle harmony accompanying them in the bass clef with a warm toastiness. The palate is lively and fresh, but with more mature notes of pineapple, nutmeg, white pepper and oriental zest.

With conversation now firmly revolving around Piper-Heidsieck, we soon moved on to the topic of Rose variants and whether it is just a pretty drink for girls and camp men, or whether there was a little more to it than that. Well, there was surely only one way to find out, so time for another bottle and this time it was the Rosé Sauvage Champagne….

As someone who hasn’t really drunk much Rosé before, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. It is bold and contemporary with a playfully elegant nose of fresh red fruit (notably Morello cherries). Notions of mandarin and even grapefruit combine with hints of cinnamon and figs. The palate is one of vibrant exuberant and warm with aromas of red plums, clementines and blood orange with just a touch of pistachio. The colour is obtained in accordance with the strict regulations of the Champagne region, through a significantly higher proportion of Pinot Noir vinified as red wine before being added to the blend. The magic is not complete until a further 24 months of of aging in the cellars.

Anyway, as much as one can describe a champagne by its unique taste, let us not forget about the sensation. In part derived from our mental associative with celebration and perhaps also a mixture of its luxury price tag and the fun of popping the cork, champagne always as this unique ability to seemingly conjure up that sense of occasion anytime. It never really feels as if you are drunk, but rather elegantly tipsy…. anyway, that is exactly how I felt after parting way with Christian in London’s St James Street, and what a marvelous afternoon!

£90,000+ raised at The Savoy's Quintessentially Charity Poker Evening

“Previous targets were obliterated last night as a whole host of Celebrities, poker professionals and business luminaries ‘Gambled for Good’. A truly glamorous and philanthropic evening for the inaugural Quintessentially Foundation Poker Extravaganza at London’s Savoy Hotel.”

Stars who turned for the evening included comedian David Walliams, cricket legends Michael Vaughn and Jimmy Anderson, plus Zac Goldsmith and Olivia Grant amongst countless other faces. All were out in force to support the Quintessentially Foundation’s inaugural poker evening, in the exquisitely restored Lancaster Ballroom at The Savoy Hotel.

Following a lavish champagne reception, the evening welcomed the VIPs and business luminaries to their seats alongside poker enthusiasts for a true ‘Texas Hold’em’ themed poker tournament. At stake were eight amazing prizes including a mind-blowing luxury safari holiday to Africa, and a ’money-can’t-buy’ culinary experience which would see top Michelin starred chef, Marcus Wareing, preparing a bespoke six course meal for the winner, and seven guests, in the leisure of their very own home.

The eclectic mix of participants all appeared to be clearly enjoying themselves, lapping up both the competitive spirit of poker whilst also mingling with others in what was undeniably a joyous and charitable atmosphere. Although don’t think for one minute that this deadened the competition, as for the lucky handful that made it to the final table, it was a long night that eased into the wee hours of the following morning. Guests knocked out of the tournament, made the most of the delicious Pommery Champagne, Johnnie Walker Blue Label tasting bar and U’luvka Vodka cocktails, as well as the canapés, live piano music and the amazing array of spa treatments plus bespoke blow-dries and massages for all the guests.

David Walliams’ unswerving attempts to disarm his competitors with his humour and amusing anecdotes proved effective, and competitive cousins Tom Parker-Bowles and Ben Elliot enjoyed the “table-service massages” offered to all participants, in a bid to ease the mounting tension throughout the night.

U.K cricket connoisseurs and former English Captain Michael Vaughn and Jimmy (James) Anderson also took part in the gambling but their poker playing was not as up to scratch as their cricketing, clearly! Forget cricketers, Alice Rothschild flew the flag for the ladies, by out-smarting all of her male counter-points by reaching the semi-finals.

The aim of the evening was to raise much needed funds for SOS Children’s Villages, the charity committed to helping orphaned and abandoned children across the globe. We are delighted to announce that, despite the economic climate, clearly individuals are still passionate about their social responsibility, with the event smashing their £80,000 target. This has been added to the £1.6million that the Foundation has raised since its fundraising efforts began in 2009.

Also note that this event would not have been possible without the kind support and sponsorship of Cramer Pelmont Solicitors.

O’Clock time design, design time Exhibition at Triennale di Milano

Triennale Design Museum presents O’Clock. time design, design time, curated by Silvana Annicchiarico and Jan van Rossem, with a special exhibition design by Patricia Urquiola, a great exhibition which will try to explore the relations between time and design. The exhibition is organised in partnership with the luxury watch brand Officine Panerai, which, at the opening ceremony, will present an installation about the design of its watches.

While figurative art, cinema and photography have developed a long, in-depth reflection about time; design has instead often addressed the subject by merely confining it to the categories of accuracy, measurability and functionality. Yet, the relations between time and design are much more complex and can reveal surprising perspectives, both aesthetically and functionally.

A wide selection of site-specific works, installations, designer items, works of art, videos by international artists and designers will try to answer such questions as: “How can time be measured?”, “How can passing time be shown?”, “How can time be experienced?”. All exhibits address such topics as the passing of time, ever-changing time, perishing, sometimes funnily, sometimes poetically, sometimes meditatively and critically.

Damien Hirst Beautiful Fractional Sunflower Panerai Painting at O'Clock time design, design time art exhibition in Triennale di MilanoThe exhibition path starts with two distinct modes of use: a “normal” entrance and a “fast track” entrance. The concept of the “fast track” derives from first-hand experience of airports: a privileged track, a sort of “fast lane,” which, transposed into an exhibition, can become paradoxical. The “privileged” experience offered by the “fast track” is reversed. Though it means moving at a fast pace it will not allow visitors to get full enjoyment out of the exhibition experience, which will remain partial. Those who choose the “fast track” will not see the exhibition in its entirety, but a rapid summary of it.

The “fast track” is a reference to what time is for contemporary mankind, who continually “fight against time” to keep up with everything that society demands of them.

The exhibition is articulated as three sections. The first deals with the measurement of time. It creates an interplay between perceptions and visions into a dark space enlivened by artificial lights, where the floor and walls become one and the objects are suspended on broken grids. The second section deals with objects that traverse time and the theme of time travel. The relation established between the works and natural light is important. The light changes with the different times of day and the seasons, creating an effect of “temporariness”. The works are freer, without a structural link between them and are presented on very spare, minimal display supports.
The third section is devoted to the representation of time through a series of limbos which serve as the settings for small scenes, small theatres, in which the objects interact with each other. The various objects are visible only once the limbos themselves have been passed. Visitors therefore have to look back to see the works. In this way the limbos annul the spatial coordinates while the lighting again becomes artificial. At the end of the path an interactive common space is laid out, where people can leave a sign of their experience, of their intervention in time.

The exhibition “O’Clock. time design, design time” is organized in partnership with Officine Panerai, the Italian fine watch-making brand that during the 1930s and 1940s created two of the international icons of time design: the Luminor and the Radiomir. For the inauguration of the exhibition, Patricia Urquiola has created the installation “I mondi di Officine Panerai” (The worlds of Officine Panerai) which, using poetry and creativity, displays the characteristics of Panerai watches, highlighting their unique design through eight historic and contemporary models. The Panerai installation will be open to the public from 11th to 23rd October 2011.

Panerai watches are also the protagonists of two of the most eagerly anticipated new works among those on display: the world premiere of new works by British artist Damien Hirst, who has used Panerai dials to create Beautiful Sunflower Panerai Painting and Beautiful Fractional Sunflower Panerai Painting, two works created with the spin painting technique.
