'Kamome Sprinter' Harley-Davidson motorcycle by Warr's

This year iconic Japanese Denim label Evisu teamed up with Europe’s oldest official Harley-Davidson dealership Warr’s of London and famous custom motorcycles designer Charlie Stockwell to create and hand build a one-off classically-inspired Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Synonymous with luxurious craftsmanship and one-off design, The Evisu x Warr’s Harley-Davidson Motorbike, aptly named the Kamome Sprinter, showcases a darkened harmonic combination of past vintage styles with modern functionality and celebrates the creativity and hand-made practices for which both brands are famous. The Evisu Warr’s Harley-Davidson motorcycle mission statement outlines that every detail crafted has its purpose and function throughout this whole creative process. Warr’s famous engineering is expressed through pure lines and timeless elegance in this design, whilst historic influences of performance, precision and production from iconic label Evisu, blends the styling of this bike to perfection. Welding, engraving, bending metal; stitching, riveting denim and embossing and treating leather – Warr’s & Evisu heritage is celebrated throughout the entire motorcycle and the same technical exactness that Charlie Stockwell rules by was taken into account throughout the design and ultimately drove this bike to completion.

Every detail of this motorcycle offers more than meets the eye. Look closely into the hand engraved engine covers and you will see Japanese inspired art. Nishikigoi Koi, scales, crashing waves and dragons are just some of what can be found on first glance of the beautifully and probably painstakingly hand engraved work of a local gunsmith in London. Look closer and you see more of the Evisu influence in symbols and characters used by the denim brand throughout their 20 year existence.

Not only is the engraving breathtaking but the overall finish of the engine is astonishing too. Everything is plated in a warm mirror like Nickel plating. The nickel plating doesn’t stop on the engine. The gas tank, hand rolled fenders and handlebars have all been polished and nickel plated. On closer examination you will notice that every nut, bolt and washer have been treated with the same care and attention.

Evisu denim has been used to wrap the brake lines and clutch cable. Adding a quirky yet vintage look. The denim is again used running along the centre of the gas tank where it meets and tidy battery cover sitting beneath a beautifully hand made sprung solo saddle finished in burnished antique brown leather. The battery cover neatly hides the ECM, battery and fuse box. It’s disguised again in Evisu denim but this time features the iconic ‘rear pocket’ with gold stitched Evisu Kamome or Seagull as its often referred to. The wheels wrapped in Firestone rubber are finished in a rich satin black that compliments the same finish of the scallop design on the nickel plated gas tank and Springer front fork. The finished bike is an absolute master piece. Executed with tremendous skill, knowledge, talent and vision. It made it’s debut earlier this year at the California Dreamin’ World Class Custom Motorcycle Expo in England and has since been displayed

in Warr’s famous King’s Road showrooms and the Evisu store on Savile Row in the heart of London. One thing known for sure is that this Evisu Harley-Davidson motorcycle will be a serious bike for a serious collector. It has recently been purchased by one of Formula Ones Superstar drivers and long standing customer of Charlie’s & Warr’s

Rum Master Tito Cordero's Diplomatico 'Ambassador Selection'

Diplomatico Ambassdor Selection Rum, 14 year old, £200 per bottleBetter known by its ‘DUSA’ acronym, Destilerias Unidas S.A of Venezuela has gained recognition for its Diplomático branded rums, helped by the warmth and personality of the globetrotting Ballesteros family who are behind the brand. The distillery, which lies at the foot of the Andes Mountains in Venezuela, was established in 1959 and is one of the biggest providers of Rum in the country. The DUSA plant covers an impressive 12 hectares and produces some eight million 9-litre cases a year. With the arrival of Diplomático Ambassador Selection, DUSA are proud to see the launch of their first ever ultra premium bottling, a fine addition to the current Diplomatico range: Blanco, Anejo, Reserva and Reserva Exclusiva.

DUSA Presidente, Jose R. Ballesteros Melendez commented on the launch:

“We are immensely proud of Diplomatico and the international success that the brand is achieving. This success is a real team effort and owes much to the pride and passion of the whole team at DUSA. It was our desire to create a truly international brand and it is extremely satisfying seeing Diplomatico in the finest establishments in New York, Miami, Paris, London, Sydney and Mumbai. This success inspired us to craft and now launch Ambassador Selection our ultra premium rum that will comfortably sit alongside other great rums and spirits.”

Ambassador Selection was created by Rum Master Tito Cordero, only the 3rd Rum Master in the history of DUSA. It is crafted from 100% heavy pot still rums and aged for a minimum of 12 years, the rum is aged in ex-bourbon casks before finishing for an additional 2 years in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks. Not only does it contain no sweeteners, caramel or other additives, its high strength (47% ABV) also means it does not require chill-filtration. This ensures that fatty acids which contribute to the mouth feel and flavour are not removed during the filtration process, giving an exceptionally smooth finish. October 2011 Tito commented:

“The creation of Ambassador Selection has taken many years but we are very pleased with the new addition to our family. Our current Reserva Exclusiva is a very well loved, smooth and complex blend and we always wanted to build on this. Through the selection of barrels containing only the finest, most complex of our rums and ageing these for a further period in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, we have not only been able to create an extremely smooth rum but also one with immense character and body. I have been working with this rum for years and even now it still brings a smile to my face”

Diplomático Ambassador Selection is officially released worldwide on the 13th October 2011. It will retail for around £200 per bottle and is available in The UK from Selfridges and The Whisky Exchange www.thewhiskyexchange.com

Rémy Martin XO & Louis XIII cocktail at Claridges'

“Cognac drinking has been reinvented at Claridges’ where a uniquely exclusive cocktail featuring both Rémy Martin XO and the truly exquisite Louis XIII is now available”

The Claridges bar in Mayfair has launched a new, exclusive cocktail: the “Fleur de Lis.”
First a suger cube is doused with Bitters then dissolved and mixed with the XO cognac. A twist of citrus rind follows, then the cocktail is served over ice in a tumbler glass before being lavished with a spray of century old Louis XIII cognac, to provide a truly memorable experience and one that simply has to be experienced to be believed.

It must however be pointed out that while the cognac connoisseurs amongst us may be crying out that it is sacrilege to dilute such high pedigree cognac with ice and orange rind, I must say from personal experience and against my initial reservations, that it really doesn’t so much ruin the experience, but rather provides a refreshing new one. While cognac is typically reserved as a distinguished night-cap or a reserved gentleman’s indulgence, this new slant opens cognac to new World of possibilities and potentially a new type of drinker.

claridges_fleur_de_lis_atomizerCrafted from the finest grapes in the grand champagne region of Cognac, where it is blended from more than 1,200 eaux-de-vie and aged for up to 100 years, Louis XIII, with a price tag of £250 per glass is one of the World’s most prestige cognacs in production today.

However, luckily for us, in their continued quest for perfection, the Claridges’ Bar have launched a cognac cocktail that utilises a specifically developed atomizer to delicately spray Louis XIII over the cocktail before being served. This gives the cocktail a mesmirisingly superior touch and an alluring aroma that almost beckons one to consider using it as a cologne
(or maybe that was just me).

The Fleur de Lis is currently available for £30.00 and will be served at the Claridges Bar until the end of the year.

Denis Broci, Claridges Bar Manager, uses a rare atomizer to spread Louis XIII cognac over the hotels new Fleur de Lis cocktail.

Keith Vaughan - An Exhibition of Gouaches, Drawings & Prints

Keith Vaughan Figures and MillOne of the most remarkable exhibitions in the recent history of the gallery was the Keith Vaughan retrospective that we mounted in 2007. Admittedly we put together an exceptional collection of the artist’s work but nothing prepared us for the reaction to the show and the acclaim it received. All 1,000 catalogues sold out in weeks and now trade on the internet for considerable sums. Incidentally we are reprinting the catalogue such is the ongoing demand.

This exhibition brings together a truly remarkable collection of over 100 gouaches, drawings and lithographs by the artist, many of which have not been seen before and come from a private collection formed over the last 20 years. Vaughan’s skill as a draughtsman is self-evident in the selected works which span the whole of the artist’s career, so tragically halted in 1977.

Private view: Wednesday 19 October, 6-8pm / Exhibition dates 20 October – 12 November 2011

Soham For Kids Inaugural UK Fundraiser Raises over £200,000

Soham For Kids, a charitable school for orphans and severely impoverished children based in Hyderabad, India, held its first fundraiser at patron George Davies’ country estate in the Cotswolds on Saturday, 24th September.

Soham for Kids Fundraiser
Attended by British and Asian society, as well as political and business leaders, it was a glamorous day with Bollywood style entertainment, champagne and lawn games.

Patron Baroness Flather:
“They say that education changes lives, but education is life itself. These children at Soham will have a future now, which would have been impossible without the school.”

A fabulous time was had by all 200 guests, who between them managed to raise over £200,000 through a sensational live auction, hosted by well renowned Sotheby’s auctioneer Harry Dalmeny, a silent auction, and a raffle. A new record was set of £20,000 paid for a case of 1995 Chateau Margaux, and one of the highlights of the day was a pledge of £100,000 by a prominent Indian businessman. Soham’s target for the event was to raise £150,000 for a new school building, a target that was met and exceeded, thanks to the generosity of the guests.

Soham for Kids, a registered UK charity, has managed to attract a high profile Board of Patrons, and a Fundraising Committee for its highly worthy cause. The move reflects the growing status and ambitions of the charity in its mission to permanently break the cycle of poverty, by giving a high quality start in life to children, who would otherwise have few prospects in terms of education or eventual employment.

The Soham For Kids Board of Patrons:

• Ron Ciccone – a distinguished diplomat of the media industry and Managing Director of Turner Broadcasting/CNN in Middle East/Africa for 25 years.
• George Davies – a highly successful serial entrepreneur, dubbed ‘King of the Highstreet’ after founding Next, George at Asda, and Per Una at Marks & Spencer.
• Baroness Flather – the first Asian woman to enter the House of Lords, and widely recognised as a champion against racism, and for human rights.
• Dr Amin Jaffer – International Director of Asian Art at Christie’s, and formerly a curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum for thirteen years.
• Baroness Jenkin – a member of the House of Lords and advisor on numerous boards including the Global Poverty Project, and Working Families Everywhere.
• HH Prince Mohsin Ali Khan of Hyderabad – a tireless worker for tolerance and understanding, including representing India at the 1994 World Peace Conference.
• Lady Renwick – Founder of numerous organisations dedicated to promoting social, political and cultural activities, and a prolific charity fundraiser.
• Deepak Seth – Chairman of PDS Multinational Group and a pioneer of corporate social responsibility in apparel manufacturing, sourcing and distribution.
• Suhel Seth – (no relation) a leading figure of Indian and international business, sitting on boards for Cavendish, RADA, Citibank and Coca-Cola.

The Board of Patrons will support Soham For Kids by raising the profile of the charity, supporting fundraising activities and providing invaluable expertise and guidance in extending the benefits of the charity’s work.

About Soham For Kids
The first event, held this September was aimed at raising funds for a larger school building. Soham For Kids expands each year by taking on a new grade, so the immediate target was for a larger school building to accommodate the steadily growing number of pupils.
Soham For Kids was founded in 2010. The charity aims to build upon the fundamentals of education by considering every aspect of a child’s development right through to young adulthood. The charity takes a holistic approach, providing vital food, clothing and healthcare alongside education. It aims to support the neediest children in the community, ensuring preparedness for the world of work after school, so investment in education results in permanent, positive change.

Soham also supports the pupils’ parents and guardians, offering vocational classes for adults, thus helping them to develop work-related skills that can provide additional household income while the children are in education. Thus far sewing classes and English language classes have been instituted.

As the school expands beyond its current site in Hyderabad, the charity is looking further afield with plans for expansion into other regions of South Asia.

Soham For Kids was founded by Faiza Seth, a business leader in the interior design industry who is passionate about education and the benefits it brings to children and adults. Faiza was shortlisted for social and humanitarian awards for her work with Soham For Kids by the AWA Awards 2011, in association with Lloyds Bank Corporate Markets.
